Coverage

Beyond the inland forecast

SwimSignal forecasts listed rivers and lakes in England. For the coast, Wales and Scotland, use the official services below. Their observations and warnings answer different questions from our inland forecast.

Coasts and estuaries in England

Find an Environment Agency bathing water for its rating, sample results and any pollution warning. Check the date and the signs at the beach. A four-season rating is not today's water test. Our inland river model does not account for tides or coastal transport and is not a coastal forecast.

Search the English coastal directory

426 designated coastal and estuary bathing waters. Snapshot . Advice can change after this snapshot: open the official profile and check the signs before swimming. Missing advice does not mean clean water.

The live catalogue could not be retrieved; names and historical ratings use the official catalogue retrieved . New designations or changed ratings may not be included.

Sample results are the latest statutory samples in the EA Water Quality Archive, checked . The archive can lag the official profile by several days. A sample describes the water when it was taken, not today. The rating uses four seasons of samples.

Wales

Find a Welsh bathing water for official site profiles and water-quality information. Natural Resources Wales explains its monitoring. SwimSignal does not yet issue Welsh forecasts. Opening the list below asks Natural Resources Wales's data service for its current samples and forecasts, from your browser (privacy).

Search the Welsh bathing waters

114 designated Welsh bathing waters, 4 of them on lakes or rivers. Snapshot of sites and samples . NRW forecasts pollution risk at some sites in the season; a forecast of no increased risk is not a water test, and no forecast does not mean clean water.

Scotland

SEPA's bathing-water service provides Scottish bathing-water information. Check the site profile and current advice. SwimSignal has not validated a Scottish pollution forecast.

Search the Scottish bathing waters

90 designated Scottish bathing waters, as SEPA listed them . A rating covers up to four seasons of samples; it is not today's water quality.

Algae reports across the UK

UKCEH's Bloomin' Algae map shows submitted reports. Read each report's date and verification category: a submitted or unverifiable record is not a confirmed harmful bloom. An absence of reports does not establish an absence of algae.

The algae observation shown on a SwimSignal spot page is the EA sampler's most recent visual check, where available. It does not identify toxic species. Broader Bloomin' Algae reports are available on the external map; they are not included in our risk level.

UKCEH's guidance and reporting app explain how to recognise and report suspected blooms. Follow local warnings and keep people and pets away from suspected blooms.

How coverage will grow

Regional observations will come first, labelled with their source, age and coverage. Forecasts require data we can reuse, a regional test on observations the model has never seen, and published evidence of useful performance. Coastal forecasts also require a model of tides and coastal transport.

The method is published, with live scores. An independent scientific review is still pending. See the development and validation plan.
